This is one in a series of case studies in how the University-Technology Enterprise Network (UTEN) is helping Portuguese Technology Transfer Offices develop practices that lead to globally competitive and sustainable operations. This case study summarizes the goals, activities and results of UTEN In-Situation training at FCT/UNL, a one-week engagement of UTEN@Austin staff at the university.

Web site development served as a framework for several of the goals and objectives of the visit. During In-Situation training, we worked together to benchmark the UT Austin OTC and other OTC web sites, and developed a specification for developing the office web site. The web site is seen as an essential tool for outreach, education about the office mission and value of commercialization, solicitation of disclosures, and interface with the various customers of the office. Perhaps most importantly, developing the web site created a challenge to cast the vision of the office and how it will interface with different constituencies.

Another important result was the definition of an overall “disclosure to patent” process for receiving, assessing, and advancing FCT-UNL technologies.
