Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia (Faculty of Science and Technology; FCT) is one of the nine academic units of Universidade Nova de Lisboa (UNL). The FCT/UNL campus is located in Monte de Caparica and covers approximately 30 ha, with additional capacity expansion to 60 ha.
Since its foundation, FCT/UNL has given priority to the promotion of research in its areas of activity. Today FCT/UNL hosts 16 research centres acknowledged by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (of which 3 are rated “excellent” and 6 ”very good”), as well as 2 Poles of research centres (both rated “very good”).
The scientific output of FCT/UNL includes a large number of publications in international journals with high impact, which has earned FCT/UNL recognition by its peers.
FCT/UNL has ca. 500 academic and research staff (320 PhD holders) and 220 administrative staff. It has 14 departments/sectors and 8 support services.
Through its departments and research centres, FCT/UNL also provides a range of services to public and private enterprises within its areas of expertise.

CENIMAT/I3N is a national scientific research center sponsored by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education, through the Foundation for Science and Technology. This center has been evaluated by a panel of international experts in the field of Materials Science and Engineering since 1996, who classified it as EXCELLENT. This grade reflects the high technical and scientific merit of the R&D activity carried out by CENIMAT researchers, translated by the quantity and quality of the scientific publications produced and the high number of scientific and technological projects. This same panel of experts also recognized that CENIMAT could be considered at a National level as “a model of excellence in the field of Materials science and engineering”. Since 2006 CENIMAT has integrated the Associated Laboratory” (I3N), (Institute for Nanostructures, Nanomodelling and Nanofabrication). It is also associated with the Material Science Department/Departamento de Ciência de Materiais of Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia / Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

Elvira Fortunato is an Associate Professor of Materials Science at the New University of Lisbon, Portugal. Prior starting the investigation on oxide semiconductor materials, she was involved in the application of large area a-Si:H to optical position sensitive detectors, where she was involved in the optoelectronic characterization and technological issues. During this period she was responsible and participate actively for the setting up of the first clean room installed in Portugal located at the Materials Science Department, the only one dedicated to undergraduate Students microelectronics and nanotechnology courses.
She was also involved in the setting up of several laboratories at the CENIMAT (electro-optical characterization, thin film production and biosensors). In 1998 she has initiated a new independent scientific research area inside CENIMAT, on unconventional semiconductors based on transparent electro active materials and she have been the team leader in this area since then. Her research team is exploring novel active properties in transparent materials as well as novel electronic-active materials, with the main objective of developing transparent electronic circuits made of stable amorphous xide semiconductors. Following the excellent and promising results obtained, she pioneered International research on transparent thin film transistors based on oxide semiconductors, proving the capability to use unconventional materials (ceramics) as truly semiconductors. One of the recent and most successful accomplishments includes the first ZnO based Thin Film Transistor deposited at room temperature (compatible with the use of low cost substrates, paper, plastics,..). This “hot topic” is followed now by several laboratories and industries around the world, especially at the USA, Japan and Korea, to which she was asked to be a consultant. Out this involvement she has to highlight a joint patent done with SAMSUNG.
Furthermore, the recent progress in nanotechnology is providing a new approach for the development of active functions in oxide materials: (i) use of natural nanostructures embedded oxides and (ii) fabrication of artificial nanostructures with assistance of thin film deposition, nanolithography techniques and new femtosecond laser processing. As one European, she wanted to be in the leading edge of this new research frontier. Since then she have applied for and been awarded several research projects (National, European and International) as well as significant grants for post-docs and PhD students that enabled a rapid formation of a strong, young, motivated, vibrant and multidisciplinary group. She has extensive experience in national and international collaborations with universities, institutes/laboratories and industries.

How to get to FCT

The campus is served by a wide transport network, including combined services (bus, train, ferry) and by tram, which terminus (“University”) is located along one of the FCT entrances.

Here are some suggestions, although there are other possibilities, combining public transportation.

From Lisbon (Portela Airport)
Using public transportation
There is a special shuttle bus (Carris nr 91), that takes passengers to Lisbon downtown in 20 minutes. This bus also stops at “Cais do Sodré” Train Station, next to the Ferry Station, where you can take a ferryboat to “Cacilhas”. Once in “Cacilhas” you can take a tram to “Universidade”, hopping off on its terminus (located near one of the campus entrances).

In Cacilhas you can also take one of the following TST buses: “Marisol”, “Fonte da Telha” or “Costa de Caparica – via Almada”. They all stop next to the FCT main entrance.
(In the airport there are other town bus lines: 5, 22, 44, 45 and 83 to Lisbon).

By Taxi
There are always plenty of taxis at the Arrivals and Departures Halls. All the taxis have meters, a ride to FCT/UNL costs approximately €30, depending on the traffic. During weekends, nights, and holidays there is a 20% surcharge.

From Lisbon (Praça de Espanha)
By car
Follow the directions to “A2 Sul”. Cross the “25 de Abril” bridge towards south (“Sul”), take the first exit after the bridge, entering the expressway to Caparica (IC20), follow the sign “Universidade”.
Using public transportation
You can use the TST bus to “Costa da Caparica” and get out at the bus stop located right in front of FCT main entrance.
