In order to be successful with technology transfer and commercialization, one should start early with the identification of valuable ideas to be protected and commercialized, the decision of when to start the process of seeking protection, the nurturing of the patent examination process domestically and internationally, and, finally, seeking marketing opportunities to license the technology protected by a strong patent. One of the most important aspects of a strong patent, after it has been drafted accordingly, it is its domestic and foreign prosecution all over the world. This hands-on workshop will build on the previous workshop. On the first day, it will focus on the necessary working knowledge from a legal perspective related to the areas noted above. On the second and third days, several important issues in the preparation and prosecution of patent applications, including know-how of how to respond to office actions and proper guidance of and interaction with outside counsel handling your individual cases during the prosecution process domestic and abroad will be addressed using cases provided by the participating institutions. We will focus more in this workshop on the role of tech-transfer professionals in these processes to assure the development of the needed legal protection for a successful product.
