Summary
The survey on the economic impact of Portugal“s participation in the European Space Agency (ESA), from 2000 to 2009, was presented at the 4th Space Forum, held in Lisbon in 2010. The survey, conducted by Clama Consulting, demonstrated that national investments in the Space Agency helped in developing a network of entities that create a significant economic impact, namely technology based companies, research institutes, universities, institutional users and central administration.
During the same event, ESA technology transfer model was also discussed along with success stories showing that space technologies have application in other sectors of activity, creating economic and social impact, if the appropriate tools are in place to facilitate knowledge and technology transfer.
The future evolution of the space sector makes it mandatory to analyze the current mechanisms for space technology transfer in Portugal, its results, positive and negative, and discuss ways of improvement, in order to further increase the return on space investment and the social and economic impact.
Within this context, this event is a response to the challenges previously described and it will join national stakeholders in technology transfer and space, with the purpose to discuss key aspects of the value chain and obtain recommendations about how to improve its efficiency and impact.
This first brainstorming session will be restricted to a limited number of participants, selected according to the topics in discussion, in a roundtable setting, with short presentations by field experienced experts, to encourage discussion and ideas. During the event, ESA specific initiatives, which aim at facilitating space technology transfer in the Member States, will be a central point for obtaining recommendations.
The results and conclusions of the event will be made available, and following sessions are expected, to analyze other issues of space technology transfer and obtain different perspectives for the future.
